Hiking and Snorkeling on Isla Coronados

Today, July 24, we got up and hit the trail before it got too hot.

A quick dinghy ride to the beach over clear water.

The beach is great and it gets lot of tourists from Loreto, only 6 miles away. But it is kept really clean and not overwhelmed by the crowds.

The trail starts off as a raised boardwalk through the dunes with signs naming a number of the bushes. After about a half mile (my camera battery ran out here – no more hiking pics!) it transitions to a sandy trail, well marked by stones on both sides. One to two miles later it turns into a scramble up loose rocks, sometimes pretty steep. This goes on for several miles. We turned back before making it to the top of the 984 ft volcano peak as it was steep with unsure footing and we did not want to run out of water on a hot day.

After lunch we went snorkeling. The water was not exceptionally clear, but OK. There were some HUGE schools of fish and lots of really large fish. This area is a national park with no fishing and you can tell by the quantity and size of the fish.

We also saw a number of rays, some very big Parrotfish and something that looked a lot like a Mexican Barracuda but the nose was too long and thin.

Tomorrow we will pull anchor and head to Punta Mangles, about 15 miles north. It is likely that we won’t have internet for much of the next week to 10 days so it may be a while before my next post. But you can always see our location by going to the Tracking Page.
