Yesterday, July 23, we left Puerto Escondido in the morning (after a 90 minute wait at the fuel doc – they were doing the annual ‘pump calibration’) and motored to Loreto, 14 miles north. We anchored off the town in an area that has good holding (nice sand bottom for the anchor to dig in) but exposed to wind and swell. But we were just there for a few hours to go in to town for provisioning so that was no problem.
After dropping anchor we dinghy’d into town for provisioning.
The Malecon (Strand or Boardwalk) in Loreto is improving but not as nice as La Paz or Puerto Vallarta. There are a few sculptures and things are being upgraded but it is still a small city of about 15,000. It was once the capital of the state of Baja Sur but in 1829 a hurricane destroyed much of the city and the capital was moved to La Paz where it remains today. But Loreto does have many restaurants and a reasonable assortment of stores and shops.
The history museum is on the main plaza. (Lisa & Frank – we may take you there when you visit)
We found most of the provisions we were looking for (everything we really needed) and headed back to Calista. About 4:30pm we pulled anchor and motored (no wind) to Isla Coronados (about 6 miles) and dropped anchor about 6pm in a very large bay with plenty of space for us and the two other boats already there. It was hot so we dove into the water as soon as we could and cooled off nicely. The bees are not a bad as some places but still somewhat of an issue here.
The moon rose full and orange over the island. I slept on the trampoline because it was a bit hot in our cabin. It was a beautiful night!
Up and heading out for an early hike before it gets too hot. The island has a trail up the 984 ft tall ancient volcano. Snorkeling later today!
Added bonus – Isla Coronados has cell signal good enough for phone calls and some internet (like this posting)! 🙂
