Great snorkeling in Tenacatita

We were told there was great snorkeling in Tenacatita Bay in an area called “The Aquarium” and we were not disappointed. Yesterday and today we spent hours in that area and saw enormous numbers of fish and one of the largest expanses of healthy coral that I have ever seen.

First, this is what it looked like directly under Calista:

Fish In Calista’s shadow

Hundreds of 6 to 10 inch fish were gathered under us. Frequently they’d all start picking things off the surface and the water would appear to be at a full boil for patches up to 10 yards across. There was even a small reef shark going after some of them.

There were schools with hundreds of Rainbow Wrasses. These are 2 – 4 inch juveniles. They have very different coloring when adult (bright red body, blue head and fins, one vertical yellow stripe behind the gills).

I even found a beautiful mermaid. 🙂
A few Yellowtail Surgeonfish
One of my favorites – a Moorish Idol
Juvenile Damselfish

I love these little guys – about 2 inches long and some have a pure cobalt blue body with the iridescent blue spots.

Adult Damselfish

When they grow up, they look like the one above, although many are all one color, which could be the darker or lighter color here.

Peggy also saw an octopus and there were many more colorful and beautiful fish.

Come visit, the water is great!

And here I am, in a full wet suit when the water is 80 degrees! Yes, I am a whimp and like to keep warm. That’s how I like it, so why not?
