Punta Perula – a town on the way up!

This morning we took our dinghy into Punta Perula, expecting it to be similar to most small coastal towns in this part of Mexico – a combination of beach town for locals and a fishing village. We were pleasantly surprised!

It does have the normal beach restaurants with plastic tables and chairs and umbrellas on the beach.

But take a dinghy ride up the small river and you see a town with lots of new construction. Start with the new dinghy docs.

This is the down-river half of one of 3 docks. This makes it really easy for boaters to come in to town (and spend $ at local restaurants and shops) or for pangas to take guests out to the islands for snorkeling and a beach BBQ.

But this is just the beginning of a new malecon that will be REALLY nice in a few years.

It has wide walkways, many places to sit and dozens of trees that, in a few years, will give shade and color to the area. It will be an anchor that the town can build from.

The town already has a number of hotels, shops and cafes.

This cafe has great breakfast and dinner menus but they take a mid-day siesta.

Of course they have the obligatory town ‘name sculpture’.

There are several nice restaurants on the beach.

We had lunch here. I recommend the garlic prawns (right, I’m not always vegan).

There is a lot of new construction in town. Add that to the new docks and malecon, and beautiful beaches with clear, warm water and plenty of space for boaters to anchor. Punta Perula is nice today and will be really special in a few years.

Note: I am starting something new with the posts. Each place we visit, the blog will start with “information for cruisers” which will be whatever I think is useful to know. For Punta Perula:
Anchorage: Lots of space, could hold dozens of boats in 12 to 30 ft depth, sand bottom, good holding. Well protected from north and west, rolly in a south wind.
Cell signal: strong
Water: Clear, 77 degrees
Land Access: 3 large docks up the river, free of charge. River is shallow stay to the right on the way in.
Shops: a few small grocery stores, one large hardware store (Ferreteria)
