Agua Verde, Puerto Escondido and a land trip to San Javier Mission with Frank & Lisa

The night of Sept28 was REALLY rolly in Bahia Salinas so at 5am we pulled anchor and left for Agua Verde, about 29 nm. We sailed and motor sailed until the wind died about 2 nm away. We were the only boat in the anchorage and we chose the south eastern area, a beautiful anchorage that is well protected from all but north winds and with great snorkeling close by.

We took the dinghy to the beach where we had an easy ‘wet landing’ in a few inches of water with very small waves (a few inches). There are two small restaurants in Agua Verde, both right on the beach. We chose the one more to the west.

Frank & I had fish tacos, Lisa a fish fillet and Peggy a vegan dish.

After lunch we took a stroll through town where we saw a couple churches.

We went to a couple small tiendas but they did not have any fresh produce to buy.

Back to the boat and time for snorkeling!

Not sure what this beauty is – anyone know?

Some areas had really clear water and an abundance of pretty fish including the blue & orange guy above that I had never seen before.

That night was popcorn and movie night (Inception), beautiful stars and a calm anchorage for a good night sleep.

The next morning we left, heading for Puerto Escondido, 23 nm to the north. Along the way we went by the high end resort at Candeleros.

Candeleros Resort. Several pools, 3 restaurants and a golf course.

And took a short detour to see ‘Divorce Cove’ and ‘Honeymoon Cove’ on Isla Danzante.

That afternoon we pulled into a slip in Puerto Escondido Marina, a place we had been several times before. The marina has top-notch facilities, a huge mooring field and is well protected from weather.

One of the first things we did in Puerto Escondido is get Covid tests for Frank and Lisa, which were needed for the flight home in a couple days.

Lisa just tested negative! 🙂

The next day we rented a car for a drive out to Mission San Javier, about 40 miles inland. We wound our way through a narrow canyon with steep green hills on either side.

There was more greenery than expected for the Baja desert.

The mission was built in the 1750s and is very well constructed. Excellent masonry, some nice sculptures and it is reasonably well maintained.

Beautiful art behind the altar

We spent the afternoon in Loreto, walking around and having lunch at Mi Loreto, which was really good! Downtown Loreto is quite nice with a walking street covered by trees and several very nice plazas.

The next day Frank and Lisa flew home to Seattle where they have a week to rest before they fly off to Europe for another adventure. We had a great time showing them our part of Mexico and our how we live down here on Calista. We will miss you!
