We left San Evaristo at about noon for a 4 hour sail to Bahia Los Gatos. The winds were initially very light so we motor-sailed. Then they picked up a bit and we sailed ‘wing-on-wing’ with the main on the port side and the jib out on the starboard side. A very nice downwind sail. Near the end the wind shifted so we finished on a beam reach.
There were 3 other boats in the bay when we arrived but one left very soon. We quickly found our boat swarmed by bees. Hundreds of them. They were looking for water. They can’t drink the salt water and there are VERY few sources of fresh water available out here. But boats always have some – maybe they know that? Or can just smell the water? We put a bowl of water out on the front deck and it was completely covered by bees in minutes.
That night was hot with no wind so we ran the AC for about an hour in the salon while watching a DVD movie. Then we ran the AC for about 30 minutes in the starboard hull (where we sleep) and it made it much more comfortable. In the morning the batteries were at 75% and the solar panels could get back up to 100% (on a sunny day, which most are) by 3pm. Later that night the wind picked up so it was a somewhat rolly night.
Early the next morning the other boats left and we had the place all to ourselves!
Los Gatos is known for its beautiful red rock formations. We went ashore for a hike to check it out.
Later that afternoon the winds got pretty strong so we decided to wait until the next day for snorkeling. The bees were still a bit of a problem all day.
