Bahia Concepcion

July 27 we sailed most of the way from Punta Pulpito to Santo Domingo (38nm) which is a wide cove at the entrance to Bahia Concepcion. We motored the final bit after the wind died. The bay does get some swell from the north but with winds mostly coming from the east and south, it had decent protection. The bay get shallow pretty far out so we anchored in about 15 ft nearly half a mile from shore. No town, not much to do here – but really good cell / internet signal! 🙂 It was pretty hot so I slept on the deck watching the stars. We spent the day catching up on boat chores, email, and swimming. It was still hot so we used the air conditioner and generator for a while.

The next day we motored 8 nm south, deeper into Bahia Concepcion, dropping anchor at Playa Coyote. There is a small town there, right on Hwy 1. We kayaked in and had lunch at a small place on the Hwy. There was no good produce at the attached tienda. And there was no internet or cell signal in town or at anchor.

The next day, July 30, we motored up to Mulege, just north of the entrance to Bahia Concepcion. We anchored outside the river mouth and dinghy’d in. It was much longer than I thought.

We had lunch, bought some provisions and dinghy’d back out. The wind came up really hard, right in our face. We got just outside the river mouth and the battery died (our dinghy is electric). The wind and waves were too high to fight our way to the boat so we went back into the river and tied up at a dock.

Looking out the river at Mulege. The white car is right where we tied up our dinghy.

After some hiking around and talking to people, we flagged down a panga. He was really helpful and towed us back to our boat.

We pulled anchor and headed back to Santo Domingo to anchor for the night before heading north the next day.
