Candeleros Chico – a new place on our ‘favorites list’

In the morning of June 25 we motored about 2 miles to Candeleros Chico (Little Candlesticks). It is a very small and well protected bay with room for one boat. Just as we arrived, a boat was leaving  – perfect timing!

Our own private bay! 🙂
Easy beach to land the dinghy

The bay is well known for great snorkeling so we spent lots of time in the clear warm water over the next two days.

A Snowflake or Clouded Morray
Female Mexican Hogfish
Round Stingray

The Round Stingray is a problem. They sit on the sand, often in shallow water. If you step on one, it whips you with its spiked tail and can give you a nasty gash. The nearby resort recommends that you shuffle your feet when walking in shallow water.

Clouds of small fish

It must have been spawning season because we saw dozens of clouds of small fish. Each cloud had fish all about the same size. Some were about an inch, but in some clouds they were so small it looked like sand or other sediment with fish no bigger than 1/8 of an inch.

Orange Cup Coral
Graybar Grunt
Flower Urchins. Careful – can be leathal if touched!
Many huge schools
A Bradley’s Sea Star

We also took a nice hike. It was hot and there was some scrambling and bushwhacking.

A nice little shelter. The wall on the right is all empty bottles cemented in a stack. Very pretty.
