On March 4, after a few very nice days in Opunohu Bay, we pulled anchor and moved a few miles east to Cooks Bay. The name is a bit curious because there is no record of Captain Cook ever entering this bay but…..
Exiting the bay, we passed a cruise ship, the Paul Gauguin, that mostly travels within French Polynesia.
We dropped anchor in 47 ft of water with a number of boats around us. But not so many that it felt crowded or hard to find a good place to anchor.
There is a really nice Hotel on the east side. It has its own lagoon and is right next to the ‘Debarkation Center’, where people from cruise ships come in.
There are some amazing rock formations making a very dramatic scene.
Lots of churches in French Polynesia!
About a week earlier, we had realized that our insurance said that we could not go west of 150 degrees latitude before May 1 (end of cyclone season) and that we had a haul out scheduled in Raiatea and that was at 151.5. So we contacted our broker and he has been waiting for word from the insurance company. Finally, late on March 5 we got a modification that would allow us to do the haul out. So we decided we would leave March 6 on the overnight trip from Moorea to Raiatea.
That will be the next post.
Spectacular skies — and those volcanic islands have such striking rock formations.
