Our first guests – Rob and Taya!

On April 15 Rob & Taya (Peggy’s brother and his wife) came for a visit. We had not seen them since Christmas and it was great to catch up with family. They flew into the international airport that is shared by Barra and Manzanillo, about 40 minutes from both. We met them at the airport and after getting them settled into the boat headed for the town. Rob is a big fan of lobster and gave a big ‘thumbs up’ to the large lobster served at El Manglito. We spent the afternoon back at the hotel, dozing by the pool and trying various drinks from the bar. It was a tough first day. 😉

The next morning we pulled out, heading south. We motored until noon then the winds picked up and we had a great sail the rest of the way. Just after we arrived in Carizal the wind really picked up, getting into the mid 20s. But by then we had the sails down and tucked into the sheltered bay so all was good. Great timing.

The water was really clear and even though a bit cold (75) we went snorkeling. Lots of very healthy coral, and that always means many colorful fish as well!

Coral as far as the eye could see!
A good sized Moorish Idol
Many colors. The blue coral was new to us.
A Guineafowl Puffer in its black spotted ‘morph’
Guineafowl Puffer in the golden ‘morph’

There were lots of Guineafowl Puffer fish, some black with white spots, some a bright gold. When threatened they can puff up to 3 times their normal size. They also are somewhat toxic due to waste products from bacteria that lives in their gut. They don’t have many predators.

Anyone know what this is? Possibly a type of Gorgonian coral?
Pretty sure this is an anemone. Anyone know for sure?

It was one of the better places we have snorkeled so far. 🙂
