San Juanico and Punta Pulpito

We intended to go to Bahia Mangles but when we got there it did not look like a great anchorage for the weather we were expecting so we kept going to San Juanico, only 8 nautical miles further. We found a secluded cove that we had all to ourselves.

That night we turned on the stern floodlights and hundreds of California Needlefish showed up. There were some bugs swimming really fast in circles as well.

The next morning began with a great sunrise.

Sunrise in Caleta San Juanico

Snorkeling started out with pretty poor visibility but we swam a couple hundred yards to another area (the pointy rocks in the sunrise pic) where it was REALLY clear and had many great fish.

Mexican Goatfish
Giant Damselfish – unusual color

Giant Damselfish are normally all a dark purple/gray but they can also be mostly a very light gray. The one above is a mix of the two.

This is the juvenile Giant Damselfish – doesn’t look much like the adult, does it? About 3 inches long.
A King Angelfish – about 16 inches long.
A Red Gorgonian

We watched a Zebra Morray Eel for a while.

We also kayaked to shore for a hike.

Peggy, ready to start!
Waiting for me, as usual!

There are some impressive homes overlooking the bay.

There was a nice outlook above the cove. Calista is hidden by the large rock in the center.

On July 27 we motor-sailed from Caleta San Juanico to Punta Pulpito.

Punta Pulpito – the 475 ft headland is visible from a long ways off.

We took the kayaks out to the point because there is a pretty spectacular sea cave.

Tunnel

Unfortunately the sea was too rough for us to get close but you can see both ends of the tunnel in the pic above. It is about 20 ft tall.

On the 28th, we went on a really long snorkel. The pics were not that great and I got pretty painful cramps in my legs on the way back.

That afternoon we went hiking. It was a steep climb to the top of the 475 ft headland but the view was well worth the effort.
