Ua Pou

On May 22 we left Nuka Hiva and sailed about 26nm to Ua Pou.

It was a nice sail with a pleasant breeze on beam for most of the trip, getting a bit light at the end. The seas were calm and at one point we hit 10 knots!

Mid afternoon we dropped the hook in Hakaheteu Bay. It is a well protected anchorage with a very small town, no stores and two small churches.

But it does have a beautiful waterfall with a wonderful pool that is about 2 miles up a dirt road and trail. We really enjoyed floating in the pool.

Perfect place for a cool dip!

I found out that my Teva sandals are the perfect float to keep my feet from sinking! Standing under the waterfall gave a great scalp and shoulder massage and we left the pool happy and refreshed.
We hear that there is also a man who makes gourmet chocolate with his own secret process (won’t even tell his wife. Says she can’t keep a secret) and a place that will do a traditional banquet for you but you need to tell him the day before.

A few nice roads in a small town.

Our traveling home, resting nicely in calm waters.
Not a white sand beach, but still lovely
One of the two churches. Marquesans are quite religious.
Very lush, warm and humid but with cooling breezes.
A traditional house (wood frame and bamboo), except for the corrugated steel sheets.
Many sharp volcanic spires.
